Modeling: Old-Fashioned Lollipops
Here you will find a series of images showcasing a set of old-fashioned twisted lollipops, their mesh, the flattened texture map, and a series of the flavors that I created for it. This entire project, from start to finish, was created by myself in the Summer of 2012.
Inspired by watching perhaps one too many Food Network shows (which I always seem to watch when I'm traveling, but never at home), and also by childhood trips to the local Hickory Farms store, I wanted to create a set of lollipops that really did look as if it had been pulled, twisted, and coiled. Just like the real thing. I knew that this was going to be a challenge to model, but I did not want it to be a challenge to map, otherwise I (and nobody else!) would ever want to create more flavors for it!
So, I cheated.
I very, very carefully modeled this lollipop in a coil, but an untwisted one. I then used Modo's native unwrapping tools to unwrap this into flat, easy-to-texture strips. Only after that did I twist the lollipop into shape, thereby creating its curved contours that were filled with flavor. It may have been a cheat, but it worked, and I had the old-fashioned lollipops I had always wanted!
